Le Leone's Blue Shih Tzu

Le Leone offers blue Shih Tzu occasionally.  When we call our Shih Tzu "blue" it is because they have the true blue (grey) coat. There are many differing opinions amongst breeders as to what is considered "blue" and it is a much-debated topic.  Each breeder follows their own guidelines. As a breeder of exotic colors, I am often being asked what I consider blue.  It is my personal opinion that blue is the color of the coat.  In all other breeds and species "blue" denotes the coat color.  We have chosen to follow these standard genetic guidelines for our blues. So a blue puppy from us will have a blue coat that goes all the way to the skin and a "blue" nose as an additional feature, not a primary one.  Some of our blues have black masks and as a result, their noses will be a bit darker.  Blues can have either light blue pigment or dark blue, but if  the pigment is black, they are considered Silver Blues. Lighter colored eyes are allowed in dogs with very light coats.  We get grey, hazel, and green eyes at times. (Small puppies may have a blue cast to their eyes, but they will change as the puppy grows older). We only sell puppies that are older - 3 to 4 months - as "blue" because we cannot properly evaluate them until they are at least 12 weeks of age and the undercoat has begun to come in.  The blue coloring will then grow out progressively as the puppy ages, but can take up to 12 to 18 months before the dog is completely blue.  The color of a puppy can change drastically in the first few weeks of it's development, (since most Shih Tzu puppies are born one color, then turn another as they grow). Before 12 weeks, we cannot give an accurate accessment or guarantee, only the breeder's "best guess" based on past expereince and the results we have gotten from similar breedings.  (We want you to be happy with your blue puppy and do our best to see that you get a true blue).

A Shih Tzu with black pigment, but a "blue", or silver colored, coat is called Silver, or Blue Silver, as featured on our Silver page.

There are other Shih Tzu that are called Cream Blue.  They have blue pigment and noses, but are considered a cream dog because they are cream coated.  You can see our cream blues on our Cream page.

Occasionally a Shih Tzu is a Blue Brindle, which features blue coat mixed with other coat colors.

Below are a few of the Blue Shih Tzu that live at Le Leone and are a part of our breeding program, as well as some that have gone on to loving homes.
